Physiognomy was once regarded as a “mysterious rule” for determining one’s fate, while GANs are “objective machines” that refine features from vast amounts of data. Perhaps, the modern society’s belief in data and algorithms shares some resemblance with ancient mysticism on a certain level.
In the ”Fate Project,” Wang Changcheng introduces Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a powerful image feature extraction and generation technology, to engage in a cross-temporal dialogue with physiognomy. This project aims to use GANs to analyze and reshape the facial features of different social groups, re-examining the possible connections between facial appearance and social identity, and exploring the potential intersection of ancient wisdom and modern technology in exploring the grand issue of human destiny.
面相学曾被视为判断命运的“神秘规则”，而GAN则是对大量数据进行特征提炼的“客观机器”，也许，现代社会对数据和算法的信仰与古老神秘学在某种层面或许有“异曲同工”之处。

The ”Fate Project ”is a large-scale art project that will explore dozens or even hundreds of different social groups. So far, the facial measurement program has been completed, as well as the production of three sub-series of works.

“To reign supreme in local wealth,” focuses on the “wealthy” group. By selecting portraits of the world‘s top billionaires from the Forbes list as the training dataset for GANs, and using GANs to learn and analyze them, the work attempts to reveal whether there are common facial features in the visual representation of wealth. This series explores the stereotypes of “wealthy” in our culture and questions whether these impressions truly reflect an individual’s inner qualities or are merely social constructs.
“富甲一方”着眼于“富豪”群体。选取福布斯排行榜上的全球顶级富豪肖像作为GAN的训练数据集，通过使用GAN对其进行学习和分析，作品试图揭示在财富的视觉表征中是否存在共通的面部特征。这个系列探索了我们文化中对“富有”的刻板印象，并质疑这些印象是否真实地反映了个人的内在品质或仅仅是社会构建的产物。

Portrait Dataset of the Extremely Impoverished and Homeless (Partial) 极度贫困和无家可归者的肖像数据集（部分）
“Penniless,” focuses on the “impoverished” group. Using portraits of extremely poor and homeless individuals as the dataset, the work similarly employs GAN technology to analyze the portraits of impoverished people from different cultures and regions. This series attempts to explore the marks left by poverty on the face and how society identifies and treats impoverished groups based on their appearance. The work aims to provoke reflection on social inequality and stereotypes.
“一贫如洗”则聚焦于“贫困者”群体，以极度贫困和无家可归者的肖像为数据集。同样运用GAN技术，分析了来自不同文化和地区的贫困人群的肖像。这个系列试图探讨贫困在面容上留下的印记，以及社会如何通过外貌来识别和对待贫困群体。作品旨在引发观众对社会不平等和刻板印象的反思。

Portrait Dataset of Nominal and De Facto Second-in-Commands of World Nations (Partial) 世界各国名义上及实际上的二把手的肖像数据集（部分）
“Most Powerful Minister,” turns its attention to the “powerful” group. Using portraits of the nominal and actual “second-in-command” of various countries from Wikipedia’s list of global heads of government as the dataset, the work analyzes the portraits of these powerful figures to explore the embodiment of power in facial features. This series examines our visual perception of “authority” and questions whether there are specific facial features associated with leadership or control.
“位极人臣”将目光投向“权力者”群体。以维基百科全球政府首脑列表中，各国名义与实际上的“二把手”的肖像为数据集，通过分析这些权力人物的肖像，作品试图探索权力在面容上的体现。这个系列考察了我们对“权威”的视觉认知，并质疑是否存在某种特定的面部特征与领导力或控制力相关联。
